27th Summer School “Dynamical Systems and Complexity”

Welcome to the 27th Summer School “Dynamical Systems and Complexity”!

As in all previous occasions, the aim of the School is to offer in a systematic and pedagogical way to graduate students, postgraduate students and young researchers:

a) Specialization on the concepts and methods of dynamical and complex systems

b) Familiarity with their applications in a wide range of scientific and technological fields.

Given the interdisciplinary nature of Dynamical Systems and Complexity, participants in the School may have different background. However, what brings them together is their common interest in the concepts, methods and recent developments and applications of dynamical and complex systems. They will also have the opportunity to present their research results in short presentations. Participation at the Summer School is free of charge. Due to the special circumstances regarding public health, the Summer School will be held online in the following link https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81251979127 . The lectures of the Summer School will also be broadcast live on the YouTube channel of the Conference Center of NCSR Demokritos, at:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRLh8K8kIod48L46hNTiscw

The Summer School has a long history and is actually the 27th in a series of events that began at the University of Patras in 1987 and continued with great success in various cities in Greece: Samos, Xanthi, Patras, Livadia, Chania, Chalkida, Heraklion, Athens, Thessaloniki and Volos. At the link http://www.math.upatras.gr/~crans/summer-school.html one can find more information about some of the previous events, while on the website of the COSA network (COmplex Systems and Applications)  http://cosa.inn.demokritos.gr/ one can find a more detailed report on the Schools and their history in the book of Tassos Bountis “The Meaning of Education: A Lifetime of Summer Schools”.

This year’s Summer School is dedicated to the 70th birthday of Prof. Tassos Bountis who was one of the founders of the Schools and their “soul” throughout the years of their organization. Prof. T. Bountis is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Patras and has taught and worked on dynamical systems, chaos and complexity in many research centers and universities abroad and in Greece. He has published more than 200 scientific papers in journals with high impact, while the citations to his work are more than 6000. Since 2014 he is a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens in the chair “Complex Systems” and in 2015 he was elected a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. A CV of Prof. T. Bountis can be found here.

In this School, researchers from Universities and Research Centers from Greece and abroad have been invited to give introductory lectures on the following topics:

  • Basic concepts of Dynamical Systems and Complexity

  • Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos

  • Nonlinear Waves and Solitons

  • Synchronization Phenomena and Chimera states

  • Fractal geometry

  • Time Series Analysis

  • Complexity and Machine Learning

  • Complex Networks

  • Applications in Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, Geosciences, Economics and Art
