GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP ON POLYMER THEORY IN SOUTH KOREA

One graduate scholarship is available starting in the Spring 2023 academic semester for the Physics Master’s program at Kyungpook National University (KNU) in South Korea. The selected candidate will conduct research under the supervision of Prof. Panayotis Benetatos as part of a project entitled “Statistical Physics of looping, disordered, and confined polymers” which is funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF).

Depending on qualifications, half or full tuition remission will be granted. (Tuition is 3,000,000 KRW per semester.) A monthly allowance of 850,000 KRW from the BK21+ Grant of the KNU Physics Department supplemented by  up to 1,800,000 KRW (depending on the candidate’s record of accomplishment) from the NRF Project Grant will also be provided.

The research project is motivated by specific systems in soft/biological matter and uses the analytical tools of statistical mechanics to gain understanding of  fundamental aspects of the behavior of those systems. Requirements are as follows: Curiosity, willingness to learn, strong background in basic Physics (including Thermal and Statistical Physics) and Mathematical Methods of Physics. Some familiarity with computer algebra systems (such as Maple or Mathematica) would be helpful. Professional working proficiency in English is expected.

KNU is located in Daegu, the fourth largest city in South Korea. It is conveniently connected to Seoul and the rest of the country by high-speed train. According to the QS World University Rankings for Physics & Astronomy in 2022, KNU is ranked 301-350. According to the 2021 Shanghai Ranking in Physics, it is ranked 301-400. According to the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2022, in Physical Sciences and Engineering, it is ranked 241.
